Classroom Procedures and Guidelines

Welcome to 7th grade Social Studies, Where geography will come alive for everyone in the classroom.  My name is Mr. Peinert, and I can’t wait to get started working with each and every one of you during this school year.  Below I’ve listed the major points that need to be put into place to guarantee us for a successful school year.

Objectives:

1.       To learn about the past and why it is important.

2.       To understand how to use geographic concepts and processes to examine the role of culture, technology, and the environment.

3.       To develop polished social skills through interaction, cooperation, and discussion.

4.       To understand and interpret maps, charts, diagrams, symbols, and drawings.

5.       To use ad apply reference tools to supplement the learning process.

TESTS:  Students will be pre and post tested this year will quiz’s that will take place during their unit of studies in this class.

GRADING:  Homework, daily assignments, test and class participation will count towards the student’s final grade.

ASSIGNMENTS:

1.     All daily assignments and homework are to be kept in neat order in the student binder till collected.

2.     Each assignment is to have a title, name, date, and period number.

3.     All assignments will be checked for accuracy and completion.

4.     No sympathy for unreadable work or work left at home, in the car, eaten by dog, or in locker.

Curriculum:  Pacing For the year

Below are topics that will be covered over the course of the year in 7th grade Geography.  Along with these topics students will have language arts skills embedded into each lesson.

The year will look at a variety of things

–      Physical Geography – What will be covered are such things as what is Geography?, Hemispheres, Continents and Oceans, and Introduction to Maps.  It 
       will continue on with the physical Geography of N. America, Latin America, Europe, Russia, Africa, Southwest Asia, Monsoon Asia, Oceania ad Antarctica.

–      Human Geography – What we will cover are such things like the impact of the environment on culture, demographics and population, and Migration and 
        Cultural diversity.

–      Political Geography – What we will cover in this unit are such things like the types of Government and Government interaction that take place in different  
        countries.

–      Economic Geography – What will be covered in this last part will tie into the types of Economies, understanding of international trade and Globalization.

These are just some of the major areas of focus for the year, We will also take time to work on a service learning project as well as get an understanding of financial literacy through the use of Junior Achievement.  

MAKE-UP WORK:  Make-up work will be provided for students with excused absences only.  It is the responsibility of the student to acquire this work and return it on time.

SUPPLIES:  Loose leaf paper, binder, pen or pencil (no RED INK!!), folder for assignments, a spiral notebook to keep study notes, and an attentive mind should be brought to class daily.  Art supplies for projects, reports, or posters will be provided or requested with plenty of advance notice.

DISCIPLINE/RULES:

1.     Be respectful

2.     Be responsible

3.     Be there/Be ready

4.     Follow directions

5.     Keep hands/feet to self

Consequences for rules violations will begin with verbal and/or written documentation.  Continued violations will be repeatedly checked.  A phone call to parent or guardian may follow.  Persistent discipline problems may result in detention or a visit to the office.  Serious discipline problems will require administrative punishment.

            Please review the following two pages.  The first is a parent or guardian survey to fill out and return with all sections filled out by Friday, August 29th.  The last page of this packet contains my contact information for you to keep for the year.  I will also be using a messaging system that will connect students and parents to important assignments and updates throughout the year so please sign-up for that. Closing Words:

            I am looking forward to this school year and working to help all of the students to gain expertise knowledge in Geography.  I am committed to working as hard as I can to make every student in my class a successful student now and in the future.  Your students will also be exposed to digital awareness with the use of Ipads and laptops in this class as well.
