GeoLab 2 - Send a Class GeoBear on a World Tour

This GeoLab can take a long time to complete so we are going to have to start early on this one if our class chooses to do it.

Here's what we are going to need:

  • One small stuffed bear that we may never see again (hopefully it will return to us). Make sure he/she is outfitted for travel.
  • One small backpack for your Bear.
  • A pencil.
  • A stack of postcards addressed to us care of our school.
  • A small notebook (for a travel log).
  • An ID tag around our Bear's neck.
  • The assignment sheet.

Preparing our Bear for travel:

The first thing you will need to do is to make an identification tag for our bear. It needs to be sturdy and attached well so your Bear can find his/her way home again. Using a sturdy piece of card write the following on one side:

  • HELLO! I'm a GeoBear from Mr. Peinert's 7th Grade class at Leith Walk Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore, Maryland, USA and I want to see the world! Could you sign my logbook and take me with you as far as you're going? And then give me to another traveler who's going even further? When I finally get back home just call my school and someone will come to get me.
  • On the other side write the following (pre-address the postcards in your GeoBear's backpack in the same way):

Picture
Our Class Name

C/O Mr. Peinert - Leith Walk Elementary/Middle School

1235 Sherwood Ave.

Baltimore, MD 21239

(410) 396-6380
Now cover the entire card with clear tape, contact paper or laminate it. Punch a hole in the card and string it around your Bear's neck so it can't come off. Remember, if he loses his ID he probably won't make it back home.

Put the pencil, travel log and postcards inside your GeoBear's backpack. Make sure the backpack is securely attached to your GeoBear.

Ok, you are almost ready to send your Bear on his way. Before you turn him loose make sure you bring him into show Mr. Peinert and to receive his travel papers (passport). All GeoBears must be cleared for travel by Mr. Peinert before their journey begins!

Launching your GeoBear:

This is the easy part. Just give your GeoBear to the next person you know who is going on a trip. Maybe a parent or friend of a parent is going on a business trip or family friends are taking off on vacation, perhaps your teacher is going to a conference or an older brother or sister is going off to college. Just ask that person to pass it on when the chance presents itself.
